Prevention of Parkinson's progression 'a major research priority'

A leading scientist has said that a key priority in Parkinson's disease research is to halt the progression of the condition.

Professor Anthony Schapira, chairman of the University Department of Clinical Neurosciences at University College London, pointed out that there is an ongoing debate as regards the stage at which treatment should be initiated.

He stated that a new study entitled Proud is attempting to investigate the slowing of the clinical progression of Parkinson's disease.

Professor Schapira commented: "Pramipexole was considered an optimal candidate for this study due to evidence suggesting possible benefits to [Parkinson's disease] patients beyond treating the well-known core symptoms."

He added that the study may generate a "major breakthrough" in the understanding of early treatment of the condition.

Earlier this week, a Parkinson's disease patient hailed the positive effect that music has had on her condition.

Thisisgloucestershire.co.uk reported that Penny Noble has been able to more effectively deal with a range of symptoms since she started playing the tenor horn with a local wind band.
